Most workplaces are now allowed to re-open. However, employers are still required to undertake a health and safety risk assessment to say they have done as much as reasonably practicable to make them “COVID Secure”.

The government, in conjunction with the HSE, business leaders and unions, have produced detailed guidance for the businesses. Each business area has its own guidance document, giving advice on things they need to consider when completing their COVID-19 risk assessment.

As with most Health & Safety requirements, input from various people within your organisation is very important. Likewise, having a fresh pair of eyes with experience in various work sectors can be helpful too. Now the government is encouraging people to return to the workplace; it is even more important to complete the COVID Secure Office Health and Safety Risk Assessment.

The link above gives good guidance on what employers can do to make their site COVID Secure, but it is also worth ensuring that businesses take a pragmatic approach:

The employer needs to ensure that there are:

  • Enhanced cleaning and hygiene procedures in line with guidance.
  • People working from home if required.
  • Reasonable steps being taken to maintain a 2m distance in the workplace.
  • People managing the transmission risk, where they cannot be 2m apart.
