National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) General Certificate
Designed for
The General Certificate is designed to provide a sound base knowledge to enable non-specialists to discharge their duties or functions in workplace health and safety. It is relevant for managers, supervisors, safety representatives and those with general health and safety responsibilities who require an accredited measure of competency in this field.
Successful completion of this course provides the basis and fulfils the entry requirements for NEBOSH Diploma level 1 courses.
There are no entry requirements for this course: basic numeracy and literacy skills will be required.
Objectives
At the end of the course delegates will be able to sit the Certificate examinations, identify and assess common workplace hazards and risks, conduct a safety inspection of the workplace and produce a report detailing appropriate cost effective remedial actions.
Course Structure
The course and exam are split into 2 sections. Paper A1 covers the Management of Safety and paper A2 covers the Identification and Control of Hazards.

- Legal requirements relating to health and safety in the workplace
- Common workplace hazards and methods of control
- Aspects of safety management and human behaviour
- Assessing and reducing risks
- Health hazards and methods of control
- Construction safety
- Training and communication
Assessment of the Course
There are two written examination papers each of two hours in duration, followed by a practical test involving a safety inspection of a workplace (½ hour duration) and the preparation of a report following this inspection (1½ hours duration).
Accreditation
Successful candidates will be awarded the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.
