These boots were made for walking ………………
…………………… and that’s just what they’ll do!!
On the 29th August, Chris Gordon and George Campbell will set off from Edale in the peak district for one reason only, to help a UK based charity called WYCE continue its excellent work in The Gambia. And after 272 miles, 32,000 feet of ascent (Mount Everest is a mere 29,280 feet by comparison), they will arrive at Kirk Yeltholm in Scotland at the northern end of The Pennine Way, to hopefully enjoy a well earned glass of cold beer. WYCE, the Wonder Years Centre for Excellence, has committed itself to supplement and compliment the efforts of the Gambian Government in the provision of excellent gainful educational opportunities, primary healthcare, life skills and employment facilities for the underprivileged communities to earn a sustainable decent standard of living. All the monies raised from this effort will be used to finish their Early Years Education Centre. Without it, they will not be able to move the two classrooms currently used in the Health Centre and will not be able to carry their oldest pupils through to the next stage.
As George himself explains: “The Pennine Way is generally regarded as the toughest, most demanding, and most challenging long-distance walk in Britain.
It's also something more than that though, it's adventurous, exciting, rewarding and hopefully fun as well. There is nothing technically difficult about the Pennine Way – we won't find ourselves dangling off ropes, clinging to rock faces or staring down terrifying abysses, but it will be tiring. The challenge is, essentially, a mental and a logistical one. Our adversaries on this walk will be the terrain, the climate and the awesome sense of loneliness”.
The reason for choosing this charity and this walk are quite simple.
It's all for a fantastic cause, a small charity in The Gambia, which is helping form a blue print for village self-development in Africa.
As we both know the amazingly selfless couple that runs the charity, we can guarantee that every penny we raise will make a massive difference to the lives of people out there, by helping fund the building of the last classroom block at Medina Salaam, the community that WYCE has helped rebuild.
The walk, as Chris explains, because it’s there and because in order to raise £10000 we realize that we’ll have to do something a bit special and a bit different. Most people take 3 weeks to complete the walk so we’ve given ourselves 12 days.
George explains further:
“It’s very easy to apply for grants and the like but we feel that it’s better to do something positive to generate our own funds and raise the awareness of the excellent work that the charity are doing. Hopefully this effort will capture the imagination of lots people who will feel motivated to contribute, either by donating, via the Just Giving page or even by offering to volunteer to work with the Charity in The Gambia”.
All being well at around tea time on 9th September Chris and George will reach journeys end at Kirk Yeltholm and celebrate a job well done.
