NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety

There are no formal entry requirements, however students undertaking the Level 5 NVQ Diploma must be engaged in a substantial H&S role within their organisation. Competence is assessed by results rather than examination.
Successful candidates may apply to the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) for membership at Graduate level (GradIOSH) and, upon completion of an open book assessment and a minimum of 2 years Initial Professional Development (IPD), can achieve Chartered level membership (CMIOSH).
An average time for completion of the NVQ is 2 years.
The Level 5 NVQ Diploma is an executive level programme covering decision making on a wide range of risks, many of which will be complex and could be life or organisation threatening, calling for a high standard of technical and managerial competence. Completion of this NVQ Diploma demonstrates the ability to put theory into practice at the workplace.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, candidates will be able to:
- Apply management principles and practices to health and safety issues
- Set practicable health and safety objectives and be able to plan and implement courses to achieve those objectives
- Recognise risks present in the workplace and be able to set appropriate control measures
- Take account of risks posed by human factors
- Ensure that adequate information, instruction, training and supervision is provided within the workplace
- Investigate all incidents involving injury or damage in order to determine the causes and to take appropriate remedial actions
- Communicate effective on health and safety issues with superiors, work people and health and safety professionals
- Understand the main legal responsibilities of employers and managers and to act to fulfil them

In order to attain the award you must achieve a pass in the 10 core units -
401 Develop and implement effective communication systems for health and safety information
501 Promote a positive health and safety culture
502 Develop and maintain individual and organisational competence in health and safety matters
503 Identify and control health and safety risks
504 Develop and implement pro active monitoring systems for health and safety
505 Develop and implement reactive monitoring systems for health and safety
506 Develop and implement health and safety emergency response systems and procedures
507 Develop and implement health and safety review systems
508 Maintain knowledge of improvements to Influence health and safety practice
601 Develop and implement the health and safety policy
Study method
NVQs are completed largely at your workplace and there are no mandatory classroom sessions, however we provide a number of taught sessions at Line Business Services offices in Keynsham where candidates will be given specific guidance on the subjects and shown how to produce a portfolio of evidence based on course work and practice.
An introductory day will be held at Keynsham. During this day candidates will:-
- be introduced to the NVQ system
- gain an understanding of the health and safety NVQ
- conduct and audit of their current competence
- develop an action plan for the completion of the NVQ
- learn how to develop a portfolio of evidence
Support tutorials will be held at agreed intervals following the induction day during which facilitators will:-
- explain the requirements of each Unit of Competence
- outline the key areas of the domain knowledge and understanding
- discuss the various forms of evidence available
- assist candidates to develop their initial action plans
- assist candidates to develop their portfolios of evidence
- assess any completed units of the NVQV
