IOSH Managing Safely - 4 Days plus Project (1 Day re-certification course also available)
This Institution of Occupational Health accredited course is designed for staff with management or supervisory responsibility for managing safely, ensuring best practice within the organisational framework and to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
The course encourages a proactive risk management led approach to health and safety examining behaviours, providing skills-based training by using practical exercises wherever possible. The course concludes with a formal examination based on assessment of skills and underpinning knowledge. Successful candidates are awarded the IOSH Managing Safely certificate.
Designed for
Anyone in the organisation with clear accountability for managing the working environment resources. Ideally supervisors, managers, project managers and engineers would benefit from gaining the skills and knowledge to effectively manage safely.
Objectives
To provide the necessary core skills to enable managers to review organisational standards, critically examine systems of work and to develop a safety based work ethic.
On completion of the course delegates should be able to:
- Explain 'Working Safely'
- Understand the component parts of a recognised safety management system such as HSG 65 or BS8800.
- Recognise the need for formal data collection to establish the causes of accidents including the physical and human aspects.
- Describe statutory requirements for workplace safety, particularly the Health and Safety at Work Act and The Management of Health
- Monitor trends and epidemiological analysis following accidents
- Define hazard, risk and safety and describe the need for risk assessments.
- Identify the hierarchy of control methods.
- Explain the purpose of health and safety auditing.
- Outline relevant codes of practice and guidance notes.
- Describe procedures and methodology for management reviews.
- Identify appropriate sources of information.

UK and European Legal Framework
Outline of health and safety legislation. Duties of companies, manager and Individuals. The legal consequences of failure.
Safety Management Systems
Outline of HSG 65 and BS8800. Policy. Organisation. Administration.
Accident Prevention Monitoring and Control
Defining an accident. Investigation and reporting techniques. Accident causation models.
Systems of Work
Procedures. Permit systems. Contractor controls. Relevant legislation.
Hazard Identification and Control
Understanding - hazard, risk and danger. Risk assessment. Risk control strategy.
Management Review
Proactive and reactive monitoring. Accident analysis and recording. Audit systems.
Course Conclusion, Project and Examination Guidance
The daily knowledge assessment and guidance gained at each review will provide a basis for this.
